Passing through the dimly lit hall, the walls warns of the life beyond with their soft green glow. The office at the end of the hall is filed with machines that breath their every breath only by the good graces of their master. Each machine is allowed to live only if the power is supplied to it. Those more clever machines have batteries that allow them to function or hibernate between those times of ample power supply. When the master is gone and does not return, the power is forever lost and the machines are forever in deep slumber.
All in all, unless you have a self sustaining power supply there is no chance of any machine functioning on its own. Even self sustaining power supplies die out or malfunction after awhile. So the possibility of machines outlasting people is very good under the right conditions. However they will not last very long.
