Sensor Based Artists

Robert Stratton

Robert Stratton makes mainly LED interactive pieces that the average person can interact with on the street level (meaning they are in store fronts around NY). His process can be explained in part from this quote on one of his pieces "Semi Boneless":

"I am fascinated by the concept of rigid, mathematically generated processes being randomly influenced by random, organic happenstance"

Through this, I think Stratton makes an interesting point on how he talks about the ways this technologically rigid "idea" of the electronics and programs can make these organic pieces through shape and interactivity. Interactivity is another key part, for interactivity isn't always a good thing and can sometimes push things into a different realm that isn't necessarily art.

Another piece of his called "prettyugly" is another store front interactive piece that allows the viewer to determine the course of the art piece. This is another interesting concept to think about in his work as well as interactivity.

Jeppe Hein

SPECTATOR

His work entails that of the spectator and truly needs the interaction of others in order for his pieces to come to life. He uses a lot of mirrors and movement within his pieces to talk about space, obscuring that space, and perspective. I like his work because of the idea of the spectator and how this plays into his pieces (the bulk of the project). I think it is interesting how you have to look at yourself when looking at a mirror and how by doing this you really have to look at yourself or perhaps someone else. And the bulk of what is behind you. Although his pieces deal with humor and space, many similarities I think reside within all his pieces.

Theo Kaccoufa

His work is in Kinetic Furniture and "genetic manipulation". He uses everyday objects and transfers them into works of art that are based on ideas of the "post-utopian" movement and future outcomes. His work is influenced by literary theories. His ideas follow around having inanimate objects come to life and how we treat these particular objects. "Genetically" combining them to form more of domestic objects.

"In a gallery inhabited by a sense of the strange made familiar, a chair suggests the way in to re-thinking the tools of interpretation."

Here is some of his work that is based around kinetics and domestic properties:
