As a midterm project for Electronic and Sensor based art, our group has proposed building a self-contained artistic prank. The art prank has been part of the history of contemporary art dating back to the Dada avant garde. If we consider a reanalysis of Duchamp's infamous Fountain, 1917 and the legacy it has left in its wake, the true intentions of the artist resurface as a post-ironic commentary on the mode and conditions of art in the early twentieth century.
Our project is an automated, sculptural reinterpretation of the classic "dollar on a string" prank. As artist's we take on the role of aggressor, psychologically manipulating the viewers sense of desire by seducing them with "a lucky find". Tension, frustration, and anxiety quickly level this peak of thrill and drama, collapsing the polarity of human emotion. Our piece is aimed to re-examine contemporary notions of human desire and also to ask the audience to reconsider the definition of art itself.
