mini project update 2

I changed the code I'm using by making some modifications from a code someone on the internet made to control the digital volume of the wave shield. Their code was a modification of the SoftVolumeHC from the WaveHC library I mentioned in the previous update.

I got the volume to decrease over the duration of the clip playback. It's kinda funky because it pops each time the level drops, as its a digital decrease. The time it takes to decrease volume is dependent on the strength with which one blows on the sensor.

This Arduino command reference sheet has been useful for making the code.

Mini project update 1

My mini project of using a wind sensor to play audio files has started moving after days of confusion. I was just looking in the wrong places for information. The codes I started with from ladyada's waveshield pages weren't working ( https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-wave-shield-audio-shield-for-arduino/play6-hc and https://cdn-learn.adafruit.com/assets/assets/000/010/334/original/daphc.pde.txt).

Well, the second one worked at least, but it took a long time to cycle back to the audio file on my SD card.

Oh, and a note on the SD card: Your wave file has to be formated to 22khz, 16bit, and mono. I did this by uploading the track to itunes after making these the itunes upload settings in preferences. Your file name should also be in ALL CAPS, like ALERT.WAV (and .wav is just the extension, not part of the file name. Right click --> get info to see if this is what your audio file is like.

I downloaded the WaveHC library and dragged the folder from within its zipfile into the Libraries folder within the Arduino system folder. I eventually realized that this gave me some new premade sketches in arduino's sketch library. The one I am using now is called 'daphc'.

I hooked up a wind sensor to A0, as well as 5v and gnd. I inserted some bits of code within the daphc file to make it play my audio file in response to sensorValue. You can see these additions by the //sensor notes.

Next goals:
1. Stop file play back when sensor value falls.
2. Write and record spoken word file.
3. Create enclosure

Developing ideas for final project

I'm starting to figure out what I want to do for the final product... Here's some information regarding it that I'm compiling.

Weather

  • High pressure is a mass of descending (sinking air) and, usually, lower humidity. Sinking air and relatively lower humidity are major reasons why high pressure is often associated with fair weather.
  • Low pressure is a mass of rising air. Relative humidity is usually higher in areas of low pressure; low pressure enables the air mass to hold more water at high altitudes and thus enhances the chances for storms.

Zuni Pueblo rain / harvest songs

My project will be an environmental sound installation that uses a barometric sensor to react to changes in pressure. When the pressure drops below a certain level, signaling approaching rain, a Zuni Pueblo rain dance song will start playing. When it goes above a certain level, indicating the cold, the Pueblo harvest music will play, signaling the change of season and

Tom Igoe

I think what Tom Igoe says about collaborating with others to learn new things and new ways to make art is very relevant and true. That being said, this is collaboration in an idealized sense. Sometimes collaboration can be stifling.
I find interesting the questions he asks in regards to the performance design portion of collaborating with diverse people all doing essentially something very similar. They are good ways of directing my own projects which are performative in nature, in one way or another.

Manga questions

1. Heat is alcohol and light is the drunkenness that comes when enough is present.
2. The light emission of an incandescent bulb functions by means of large amounts of heat emissions.
3. A super conductor is a super cooled metal that has no electrical resistance, allowing a current to flow once applied without a continuous power source. They are used in MRI machines and article accelerators. I would need access to a lab with at least liquid nitrogen and very specific metals to create a super conductor.
4. Amperes law states that a circular electromagnetic field will be produced around a wire that has electricity flowing through it.
5. A force of attraction is produced between the two wires.
6. The fields cancel each other out.

project 1 process

I've been working on an Incan pyramid kinda thing that has a triangular plexiglass window attached to the top of it. I'm still not entirely sure what electrical stuff is going to be integrated into the piece, but my mind was so scattered between ideas, I just had to start something to create some mental boundaries. I am thinking that as viewers approach the object, an ultrasonic range detector will increase the speed of LED flashes illuminating the plexi window (which I will either glue cattail seeds to or paint with encaustic).

Affordances recflection

Affordances make up the grounds for everything we interact with, from chairs to people to people systems.
The environment offers many affordances and a way of life is a utilized set of affordances.

I found it interesting when Gibson was talking about barriers and imprisonment as locomotion impeded on all sides and that the story of the saint on the high pillar was imprisoned by precipices. Similarly, one may be imprisoned in a building not because you are locked in, but because there are zombies outside. But maybe your unwillingness to become a zombie is just your high pillar.

Depending on what the object is, it may be interepreted as affording different things to the animal that is interacting with it. This tells us something about our way of life or way of thinking.
A hand held tool may afford writing, but what is it affording if one chews on it in creative anxiety?

Reading questions

The speed of an electron is a property of its own energetic nature while the speed of electrical motion is the rate an electron moves from point a to point b through resistance.
Energy is the work required for the function of a load, and resistance is the limiting factor of a load on the energy flow. Every household appliance is a resistor on the energy.
Ac current alternates the flow 60 times per second between two directions while direct current simply goes in one constant direction from a positive to a negative terminal.
Series: 14Ohm
Parallel: 3.4Ohm

3 artists

DiMoDa- digital museum of digital art
http://digitalmuseumof.digital/art/
DiMoDa is a museum that exists in virtual reality, or physical computing that reacts to your movements while transporting your major senses to a digitally created world. The curators of DiMoDa exhibit the artworks of other VR artists, but this curation could be considered art in its own right. The environments and realities we are capable of experiencing through VR are only as limited as our own imaginations so I think this curatorial project is really important for the development of a new technological art medium. The museum is also downloadable to anyone who has a VR platform, so its public accessibility is intriguing as well.

Rafael-Lozanno Hemmer
I find the diversity of his work intriguing, from the romanticism of solar flare display to using measuring tapes as time measuring devices. I like this because many artists make stances as to what art is "for", but Hemmer uses art both in a romantic way and in a critical way.

Haque
I find the Haque / Umbrellium group interesting because it exhibits two trends that I see recurrent in electronic based arts - large group collaborations and architectural thinking. I think the Primal Source piece is interesting because it gets people to make noise. I wonder if it is connected to primal screaming therapy. I don't necessarily agree with the piece for its large use of water. I hope they just used water from the ocean. California is so water scarce. I'd expect to see this piece in Las Vegas, where water is flaunted like the dryness of the mirage that is this devils playground.
