Stelarc: The Man with Three Ears

Stelarc is a performance artist. His media includes robotics, computer programming, and surgical modification. I included this video which is an overview of much of his work but I specifically enjoy the Extended Arm Split Body Performance (3:00) where the body has a mechanical manipulator. Exoskeleton performance which is a six-legged walking robot with is an impressive walking and sound machine that took 6 months to total to make. I really enjoy the way he experiments with technology and his own body. I do know see myself this involved with my work but it is some great inspiration. 

Balam Soto: take 2 Exp.Inst.Rain and Exp.Inst.Moon

"By touching the experimental instrument’s copper tape sensors at various points, participants are able to create a range of sound effects, which in turn, produce changes in the projection." These two works by Balam Soto are very similar to my initial idea. I love the interaction and visuals that happen with basic touch. I know this took lots of work.

Gábor Pribék: Clmbstrmnt

Gábor Pribék is a media designer. This is his project Clmbstrmnt. It says it's an interactive climbing wall. The description of the work is in code so I can't fully describe it. But I know that it is using Arduino. It insires me greatly because the viewer is controlling what is happening as they interact with it and it creates the beautiful work as much as they commit. I want to do something similar. Check it out below.

Kyle McDonald is an artist who primarily works with code. He is a contributor to openFrameworks  and other tools that use algorithms. According to his bio, he " enjoys creatively subverting networked communication and computation, exploring glitch and embedded biases, and extending these concepts to reversal of everything from personal identity to work habits." He's a member of F.A.T. lab,adjunct professor at ITP, resident at the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie mellon.

His work Conversnitch, 2013-2014 with Brian House features a lamp that listens in on people's conversations and livetweets them using a small mic and a raspberry Pi that records audio snippets and uploads them to Mechanical Turk for automated transcription.

• I enjoy the relationships that he creates betweeen people and technology, the way that people serve as the seed for the creation of the art, but ultimately have to give up control of the information/data. I'd like to do something similar, with people providing information but otherwise not actively participationg in the technology's creation of art.

Connected Worlds by Design I/O is a large scale immersive installation developed for the New York Hall of science. It is fascinating and beautiful.

• This is really very much in line with the solarpunk aesthetic I'd like to include in my piece. The merging of nature/tech in such a way is something i would like to emulate. 

Arnaud Pottier  is the Art Director of the BK Digital art Company. His GOLEM series uses projection mapping on statues to create something that falls quite deeply into Uncanny Valley. The sculptures seem to literally come to life. The creepy music doesn't really help either.

• there's an element of 'uncanny valley' to this particular work.

For my semester project, I was thinking of using this code and change it so that as a person gets closer, the more visible the image of a bird becomes (or perhaps something similar to the code? Where a person can blow on the bird and it flutters away?)

Lisa Park

She wears an EEG that creates sound waves in bowls of water via her brain-waves. Different brain waves represent different emotions (Sadness, happiness, anger, etc.).
