Manga 3

What is the relationship between heat and electricity. Please provide a metaphor.
When the electricity flows through a resistance heat is generated. A metaphor is like when you are driving it’s like the electric flow, traffic is the resistance, and heat is when your able to drive progressively (and get to class on time).

Why is it warm near an incandescent light bulb?
It’s warm because of the Thermal Emission. The thermal energy is emitted because the temperature of substance increases.

What is a superconductor? What are they used for in real life? You may have to look this up. How could one make a metal a superconductor?
Superconductors are materials that conduct electricity with zero resistance below a certain temperature. Mercury was historically the first to show superconductivity. “Magnetic-levitation is an application where superconductors perform extremely well. Transport vehicles such as trains can be made to "float" on strong superconducting magnets, virtually eliminating friction between the train and its tracks.” You lower the pressure and cool a metal to make a superconductor.

What is Ampere's Law?
When the current flow goes through the electrical wire magnetic fields are generated and create a circular pattern. This is Ampere's Law.

If current of the same size flows in the same direction in two electric wires placed side by side, what happens?

They will be attracted to one another.

What happens if current of the same size flows in opposite directions in two electric wires placed side by side?

They will resist one another.

Please read about Flemings Left and Right Hand Rule. Think about this Rule with respect to the motors we have made this week.
It how the direction of flow is controlled. The left hand rule is in charge of direction of the current, the DC motors left hand force is in charge of the way the motor turns.

Manga Guide to Electricity part 4

1. Diodes and Transistors are examples of semi-conductor devices.

2. Silicon tends to be cheaper than other materials. It also has a wide temperature range and has a high purity of 99.99%

3. N-type semiconductors have negative electron properties. P-type semiconductors have positive properties, they are missing an electron.

4. Diodes consist of p and n type semiconductors. This allows electrical current flow in one direction with a wall in-between them.

5. This allows current to flow in one direction.

6. The raw materials in the semiconductor creates the color, by changing the raw material you can change the color.

7. Base current is when current flows from the base to the emitter. Collector current is when current goes from the collector to the emitter. The collector current thus gets bigger than the base current.

8. A transistor does not get worn out easy, its also doesn't fail, and can be more precise when controlling it.

House Hold Appliances Manga Part 1

House Hold Appliances
1. Ceiling Fan
It uses 35 watts
at 20 hours per day 365 day per year I'd be spending $30.66 at 255.5 kWh a year

2. Clothes Dryer
it uses 2790 watts
at 1 hour per day 50 days a year I'd be spending $16.74 at 139.5 kWh a year

3. Microwave
It uses 1500 watts
at 30 minutes a day (over exaggerated) for 180 day a year I'd be spending $16.20 at 135 kwh a year

4. HD TV Television
it uses 234 watts
at 4 hours per day 365 days a year I'd be spending $41.00 for 341.64 kWh a year

5. Video Game System
It uses 36 watts
at 5 hours per day 365 days a year I'd be spending $7.88 for 65.7 watts a year

Questions
1.The TV the Microwave and the Games System cannot be in one outlet, it exceeds the wattage for the outlet.

2. Electric Current is the rate of charge flow at a certain point in a circuit, its measured in coulombs per second (amperes)

3. It was difficult to find this information because I live in a huge apartment complex.

George Banks: Manga part 2 Questions Exercise

Manga Book Question:

1. To be posted

2. The speed of an electron is slower compared to the speed of electrical motion which is equal to the speed of light. The speed at which electrical motion is transmitted to neighboring electrons is that of the speed of light which is 300km per second. The current also flows at 300km per second.

3. Load is what converts electrical energy to light/ heat. Electric resistance is when the load hinders or retards the flow of current. The eyes on electric stoves uses resistors when changing the dial from low to medium to high heat. Resistors block or retard the total energy in a circuit.

4. AC is alternating current, the current goes clockwise or counter clock wise. An example of AC is an outlet.
DC is direct current. current direction is the same, its constant. An example of DC Current is a battery.

5. If connected in a series Then this would be an equation-->6ohms + 8 ohms = 14 ohms
if connected in parallel this would be an equation--->6ohms +8ohm/6ohms + 8ohm = 3.4 ohms
