Transistor Questions

So the class answered the questions when I was late because of Career Showcase, so I never got the chance in class to write them up in class. Here they are!

What technology was used prior to transistors to amplify a signal? How did it change the history of communications in the US? What was the metaphor that the video used to describe how this technology worked?

The vacuum tube technology was used prior to transistors. The metaphor used in the video was monkeys throwing pebbles (electrons) through a shutter (wire). It changed the history of communications in the US because the transcontinental telephone became a reality.

Describe the break through in the 1947 that made the transistor a reality?

He fixed the problem of water condensing on a silicon surface. By adding water to the semiconductor, the charged particles of the water traveled down to the silicon and neutralizing the surface barrier.

What do we learn from watching this video about group and team dynamics that we can apply to our own situation? What was successful about this team? What was its downfall?

From this video, it seems that pride and control were big issues that created divisions within the team dynamic. The team worked well together when it came down to process and experimenting and science, but the team politics were a lot of the downfall, and it seemed to be pinned on the most stubborn, prideful person in the group. It's important to learn to have good workmanship and good work ethic when working within a team and to avoid a ringleader while making decisions as a group.

What medic and social changes occurred as a result of the transistor?

As a result of the transistor, transistorized radios came into existence. This allowed portable, personal radio devices. This meant that you could listen to radio media broadcasts from anywhere from your pocket. Additionally, anything electronic was becoming portable and cheap. Transistor radios also influenced the music culture in such a way that music became more "daring" because the youth could listen to it away from their parents.
