What we did in class:
Three Artist:
Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller
Paradise Institute
Janet Cardiff and her husband, George Bures Miller are known for doing many things in art. More specifically, they were known for creating Paradise Institute. This piece focused and the language and experience of cinema. When you approach the instillation you first see a large wooden box, once inside, you are greater with a tiny theater. The box gives and illusion of what a grand theater should look and sound like, i.e. When you look down from the "balcony" you see a small screen and smaller seats. The viewer can then put on headphones and watch the project.
Wafaa Bilal
3rdi
Wafaa Bilal is a storyteller. He talks about his past and how he was traveled from Iraq to Saudi Arabia to Kuwait to the U.S. He talks about how he never really took the time to absorb these places he visited before arriving to the U.S. In this piece, titled 3rdi, Bilal connects a temporary camera to the back of his head. By doing this Bilal is able to take photos every minute of anywhere he goes. These photos are then sent, immediately, to a website for the public to view. To take these pictures, Bilal connects a USB to the camera and to a computer which he carries, as well as a wireless connector to access the Internet.
