2. Contrast the speed of an electron with the speed of electrical motion in one sentence.
- Electrons move at a very slow speed, less than 1 cm a second, however electrical motion is transmitted to neighboring electrons at the same speed of light, so electrical motion is very fast, the speed of light.
3. Briefly explain the relationship between resistance and energy. Use an example from your house.
- A lamp uses energy, or power which flows as a current through the lamp until it gets to the load/light which has electrical resistance since it converts the electrical energy to light energy.
4. What is the difference in AC and DC current? Give and example of each from your daily life. If you get shocked,
- AC current is Alternating current, DC is direct current. AC power is power that supplies houses and buildings, pretty much anything you plug into a wall socket uses AC power. DC power is power that supplies a constant voltage, essentially anything powered by a battery is powered by DC power. DC power supply always has a constant current size and direction, whereas AC power has a current with constantly changing direction, and its size varies according to a regular waveform.
5. Determine the equivalent resistance of a 6.0 Ω and a 8.0 Ω resistor if …
a. … connected in series.
- 6.0 + 8.0 = 14 Ω
- (6.0 * 8.0)/ (6.0 + 8.0) = 3.43 Ω
