Soft Rains

In my house there are battery operated gadgets and then there are objects that depend on the electrical power supplied by the city's power grid. If the apocalypse were to come, there would be a really fascinating situation that would reflect the human deaths. Things like lightbulbs, lamps, tv's and refrigerators that involved human involvement in some way but rely on the power grid would die first. Then there are things like clocks and flashlights that would last longer. But how much longer? A week, a month, maybe, just maybe through Winter. Some of the batteries might be on their last leg while others my be brand new. There's an eerie sense of impending doom about the whole situation. Is there some kind of power source somewhere that may have survived to help fix and replenish?

It's very possible that a house can die. I've seen it in many forms, electrical, physically damaged, bombed and demolished. A lot of science fiction reflects our real world fears and its right to do so because we don't know how the next ten minutes might play out.
