10/12 Kayla Evans Mini-Project

-For my piece, the color output of an LED is controlled by the way in which the piece is tilted; I want the viewer to tilt the piece around and, in this way, indirectly sift through the ash so as to discover the story written on the incompletely-burnt bits of paper. A piece of metal inside of the glass box helps to reflect more light from the LED within the box. I would have liked to have incorporated more pieces of paper with writing on it, as well as more ash and bits of metal.

  1. Kelsey Wilkerson-- I really like this piece. It involves a lot of interaction which makes it fun. After reading your description I played with it a second time so I could try to read the pieces of paper.

  2. Jen- Your piece is really stunning and shows a lot of effort was put into it. I love when you experiment with material in your work and this piece is no different. I think the lights flickering when tilting is really successful and I do like the fact that you can't gather all of the story from the bits of paper.

  3. MTM- Kayla this is so cool. The addition of a motion function along with a visual is very aesthetically stimulating- great job!

  4. Maria - Your piece is really successful, I like the accelerometer that allows the LEDs to change color as you tilt the box. It makes it interactive!! :D

  5. Madeline - the interactivity of this piece is really engaging--I think the motion of tilting and turning the box combined with the flickering of the LED in different colors creates a sweet hypnotic effect.

  6. Aaron- I really like this piece. The glass box is fun to handle and your use of the colored LEDs really draws me in to the interactivity. The action of sifting is a really interesting way to approach sensors. I would encourage you to play with the same idea but maybe use some other materials (wood into charcoal) and think about how the lighting can transform it. Very cool; keep it up.

  7. This is so cool. I didn't even know we had tilt sensors. I kinda wonder why you chose this way of displaying. Like the materials and the way they're placed. All in all, your tilt sensor box is super cool, are you using this idea for your final?

  8. I love the box. Seriously. And how you displayed all those metal scraps in it; seriously cool. I like the tilt sensor idea, but maybe make it more obvious that you are supposed to tilt it? Like one of those little hand games with the carved wood and the little meat balls that you need to roll into the middle? Like attach one of those to the top or something. Or put little metal ball bearings inside the box so people can roll then around .

  9. i like that you have to pick up the piece for it to work. it reminds me of a portable bonfire. I wish there was some kind of indication that would allow the viewer to know that it was suppose to be picked up.

  10. This is a good start. I am interested in the box with ashes in it. I might find a better way to protect the arduino because I think that the ashes will cause the arduino to malfunction eventually. The band of plain paper is a little disconcerting because I am not sure if it has meaning to the piece or is just there to hide the arduino. I am interested in the color wheel and I might need more instruction so that I know that I should pick up the box.

  11. I think the concept you have going here is mysterious and thought-provoking. I love that I am able to handle the piece and cause something to happen - that level of interactivity is preferable for me. But also, I wish that your intention of having people want to read the pages was more clear. I did not initially realize there was text and would not have handled the box if you had not told me to. Just think about how to get the audience to touch and interact with the piece in the way you want them to! -shimul

  12. Dreezy - Nice work! I don't like the paper, it's not enough writing to read and when I pick up the box I focus more on the colors, so maybe make that a part of a larger theme to explore. Or change the way the paper is incorporate. Great job!

  13. because it looks like glass, the size, and that you place in on a pedestal and it has wires coming out of it I don't feel totally welcome to pick it up and move it. BUT, i think it is a really interesting idea that you should continue to experiment with. i'd love to see more LEDs and a more finished looking piece. This is such an exciting and interesting idea. I love the interactivity of it and that you really had an idea and purpose for it -- that a person would want to discover something and by their exploration something else happens

if you want to use plexi talk to me :) I've built a lot of boxes -- I might be able to help

  14. It had a great investigation for me to find that how it works, but maybe it needs more direction that how the sensor works and what is the relation with forms. Good job . Setareh
