Sensor presentation 10/5

One of the sensors that I've decided to use for this project is a light sensor, the most simple of which is the photoresistor, which we used in one of the Exploring arduino exercises.

How does it work?

  • The Lilypad light sensor outputs an analog value from 0 to 5V. Exposed to daylight it outputs 5V, covered or exposed to no light it outputs 0V. In  normal indoor lighting it outputs from 1 to 2V.

What flavors does it come in?

  • Lilypad offers one light sensor, but there are many different types offerd by different companies. 
  • There are basic photoressistors, which tell the basic strength of light. 
  • SParkfun also offers different strengths of light sensors, some which measure white light, ultraviolet light, and even a color sensor, which is really neat.

What are its practical applications?

  • Light sensors are really useful for night lights, garden lights, street lights. basically anything that only needs to turn on when it gets dark. It keeps from wasting energy that way.
