10/5 Manga Guide to electricity 156-195

Please answer the following on the blog:
1. What is an example of a semiconductor device?

  • Diodes and transistors are examples of semiconductor devices

2. Why is silicon used in the manufacture of semiconductors?

  • Refined silicon has a purity very close to 100%. It can also be

3. Discuss the difference using an example of the difference between and N-type and P-type
semiconductor.

4. In your own words describe what a diode does and the role of N and P type semiconductors.

  • A diode essentially acts as an electrical gatekeeper, allowing current to flow in a single direction, much like some NPC gatekeepers. they are a mash of N and P type semiconductors, one on each end
  • N-type semiconductors are negative, in that the electron that has a negative electrical property becomes a carrier of electricity
  • P-type semiconductors are psoitive, the 'hole' or electron with a positive charge becomes a carrier of electricity

5. What is rectification?

  • A property of something (like a diode) which allows current ot flow only in one direction

6. What causes color in an LED? Give an example of what causes a particular color.

  • The forward direction of flow in the semiconductors emits light in LEDs. the color is determined by the material of the semiconductor

7. What is the relationship between base current and collector current in a transistor?

8. What are the advantages of a transistor over a switch?

  • A transistor lasts longer as it is not subject to the same wear and tear that a switch is, it is also faster than a switch
